My name is Mojir Muhajir (Moe-JEER Moo-HAH-jer). Mojir means the savior and Muhajir means pioneer.

As refugees, we don’t just learn to work with the resources that we are given, we embraced them. We don’t have the luxury of being good, we are obligated to strive for excellence so we can turn our dreams into reality.

When I moved to the US over a decade ago, I didn’t know where my Interest in the medical field would take me. Through years of undergrad and graduate studies, community service, and scientific research, I found fulfillment in the study of medicine. Now as a third year medical student, I get to remember every day that my reality was once my dream.

Research

“This scientific power investigates and apprehends created objects and the laws surrounding them. It is the discoverer of the hidden and mysterious secrets of the material universe and is peculiar to man alone. The most noble and praiseworthy accomplishment of man, therefore, is scientific knowledge and attainment.” ~‘Abdu’l-Bahá

Recipient of Kenneth A. Suarez summer fellowship research scholarship award in 2023.

Case Studies

During my Internal Medicine rotation, I worked on cases from two patients with a history of bariatric surgery who were prescribed Prolia as part of their osteoporosis treatment regimen and developed severe hypocalcemia subsequently.

During the first two years of medical school, I focused much of my time outside of studying on learning the fundamentals of scientific research. I engaged in a research project that helped me develop the skills to ask critical questions and explore methods to effectively answer them.

In our laboratory, we developed a three-dimensional model of the larynx utilizing computed tomography (CT) images. I conducted an analysis of the laryngeal structures within these CT images and devised a metric to quantify their symmetry. Subsequently, I employed the 3D renderings of the models to evaluate the degrees of asymmetry and correlated these findings with various biometric factors to elucidate the underlying contributors to the observed data.

Pushing the current frontiers of research on the influence of biometric factors on laryngeal function

One of the factors influencing laryngeal function, that has not be throughly investigated, is the anatomical position of the larynx in the body. I analyzed the data gathered from 210 human subject to understand the factors that influence the symmetry of the larynx and subsequently its function.

This presentation was published on world’s first repository platform, Underline.io, by AMA.

During my master's program, I concentrated my research on a meta-analysis of current studies concerning the treatment of sleep apnea in the pediatric population. Collaborating with my colleagues, we aimed to determine whether Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines or surgical interventions are the most effective treatment options, or if alternative approaches exist. Under the mentorship of faculty from the College of Dental Medicine and the College of Graduate Studies at Midwestern University, we conducted nine months of research and revisions before presenting our findings in April of 2022.

Advocacy & Leadership

As an effort to better understand the current discourses of my profession and participate meaningfully to them, I Participated DO day on Capitol Hill,Arizona DO day and met with senators and congressmen on to discuss the relevant bills that were going to be introduced.

As a member and chair of Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) chapter at Midwestern, submitted two resolutions to House of Delegates in 2023.

AMENDING RESOLUTION S-20-29 TO SPECIFY THE USE OF STANDARDIZED PATIENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL SCHOOL CURRICULA

AUGMENTED NRMP RESULTS AND DATA REPORTING TO ADDRESS DO MATCH DISPARITIES

Not only these resolutions got approved but influenced some of the most recent efforts of AOA on match disparities.
